Rock Raptors vs Shilbottle Pitmen

Rock put away their whites for a few weeks, and their run of bad results behind them as we all turned up with enthusiasm and some flash new coloured kit. A strong, cold northern wind howled across the field and we took first go with the never before seen pink ball.

Tight bowling restricted the Pitmen to 98/9, only the Fairgrieve’s and Barry Inglis making it into double figures.

In reply Rod & Kev got us off to a solid start, Kev being the more aggressive with the fielding restrictions in place.

Kev and Shorty holed out in the chase, but Mick W. and Rod saw us home. Rod stylishly ending the game with a six. But you can see all that for yourself in the video below, filmed and edited by our own Steven Gray!

Scorecard

Our shirt sponsors braved the cold and the wind to hopefully enjoy our performance, and celebrated an opening win with a warming cup of coffee whilst the rest of us tucked into the barbeque (and drink!).

Twenty20 Cricket comes to Rock CC

badge_250
This weekend a new form of cricket debuts at the Rock “polygon”, yes we may have played 20 over cricket for many years but not like this.
Adopting the fielding restrictions and coloured clothing you see the pro’s wearing on the tv, finally we are going to play a similar game.
I’ve been reliably informed that our kit has been emblazoned with our new sponsors decals and many await squad names and numbers from the team (please forward details to Tony ASAP).

Our sky blue kit and navy trousers are far flung from the dull monotony of the whites we wear all season long. We are able to wear this kit only due to our kind sponsors D. Renton & Sons (Alnwick) Ltd and Sara Eke Recruitment Ltd. Many thanks to both these very local though widespread businesses.

So please come along and see the spectacle and hopefully the “show” we’ll put on for you. Refreshments will be available inc a few cans, teas and a bbq.
Start time is 2pm

The Final Countdown

Well, dear reader, after 8 months, your correspondent has decided to take up the keyboard of doo-laden philosophy once again. However, I fear this may be the last time I raise my quill, (it’s a kind of pen, Tony), in anger. That is, until the inevitable reunion & tour, the odd guest appearance & plethora of reality type columns for the gutter press. (Or not). Anyway, we are 4 games into the season & still not a sniff of a win for the mighty Rock CC. After the triumphant end of last season, hopes must have been high of a winning start to 2010. In summary, Rock were enthusiastic at Wooler, Short of manpower at home to Embleton, (9 men, gave them a fright though!), Brainless at home to Mitford and finally, utterly hopeless at Alnmouth. Of course, great credit must go to our opponents but they seldom had to slip out of first gear. There have been some notable exceptions to the norm but they have been too few & far between. When you can only score 111 on an absolute belter of a pitch, questions have to be asked; such as; Where is the fighting spirit? Why bother having practice on a Friday night if no-one turns up? Why doesn’t half of the squad answer the text messages they are sent every week? Why do we have to try & belt every ball out of the park? Who cares if Gareth Barry won’t make it to the World Cup?

Let’s try & answer a couple of those questions; Fighting Spirit is engendered by a sense of “team”, which in turn should result in a high level of mutual respect between the team members, something that is sadly lacking at Rock. Your captain on a Saturday is exactly that, he is there to be respected. If you don’t practice, (including myself), you won’t get any better; as Gary Player always says, “the more I practice, the luckier I get”. The system that Tony set up regarding availability via text message is a good one, practically foolproof, you might say. Common courtesy demands at least a reply. Speaking of The Pieman; he is a genius with a cricket bat in his gloveless hands, he can, on occasion, belt every ball out of the park. Unless you possess his natural ability & power, you have to graft for your runs like the rest of us mere mortals! Oh, and Gareth Barry couldn’t lace Paul Scholes’ boots.

Ah, well, I wanted to be all positive & feeling good about the future, encouraging my pals to greater feats of derring-do. Try this, then. You have all got the talent & tenacity to pull this round, make a difference, get us a win. We need to do what we did at the end of last season & work hard, the results will come. I believe!!

Right, then. Off to the land of King Arthur & 6-toed locals to scoff some cream teas & drink a little bit of cider! 2 wins & some good weather is all that I could wish for & see you all on Bank Holiday Monday at the polygon. I’ll leave you with these random thoughts: Vote for your local Sheriff, Pay for your own sweater for T20, Real Ale is a myth, it all tastes like gut-rot to me, Be nice to people; they are potential sponsors and finally, thank you for allowing me to whinge, whine, eulogise, fantasise and generally be a right miserable old bastard for the last 2 years. Honest, it’s been fun!!

Apologies & a few updates

Due to some significant movements in my life I haven’t had the time to update our blog since the beginning of the season. I’ll try and be better over the coming weeks.

Firstly a huge thank you to Phil Green & Colin Barker and their friends in Rennington for organising and holding a Gala Dinner at the Horseshoes Inn in aid of a number of good causes including our little club. From this we were the beneficiaries of a handsome £550 for which we are forever thankful to those who attended and were so generous to all the good causes.

Next, we need to start winning or at least showing some fight! Played 4, lost 4. Not even close in some of them! Mr. Calm has something to say about this in the next post!!

Results are as follows:

Wooler CC (away) – Sponsored by Paul & Judy WestonScorecard

Embleton CC (home) – Sponsored by David DunnScorecard

Mitford CC (home) – Sponsored by Mr P. BridgemanScorecard

Alnmouth & Lesbury CC 2nds – Spon. by David HeadScorecard

Sincere thanks to all our matchball sponsors!

There’s been a change to the Twenty20 fixtures for us, instead of travelling to Howick, we now have a home fixture against Shilbottle on the 19th of June. Please note all T20 games begin at 2pm. Expect fun and festivities on the day!

Wednesday 14 April 2010

T20 Fixtures announced

Haven’t got FULL details yet, but at least now I can fill in our completed fixture list for the season.

Basically all the teams are split into 3 groups (areas), “Tweed”, “Aln” and “Coquet”.

Tweed:
Chatton
Tillside
Berwick
Wooler

Aln:
Embleton
Rock
Howick
Warenford

Coquet:
Shilbottle
Mitford
Alnmouth
Warkworth

Our fixtures are as follows:

19th June – Howick (a)
26th June – Warenford (h)
3rd July – Embleton (a)
19th July – Finals Day

Disappointingly only one home game, so we’ll have to make the most of it and make it a true event!

And the winner is...

Today marked the beginning of weeks of aches and pains, hilarity of fielding fubars and plenty of "ducks" to pack the team bag! We lost to an Almouth XI which all the damage was done by 1st XI players in thier side.
Handy knock by Tony with 66 blazed runs and the master craftsman Mick Williams took 4/52 with the ball.

Today also marks the end of voting on the team name we will use (league committee permitting) for the 20/20 cup competition which gets underway in June at the halfway point of the season.
So the winner is... (Hollywood babe Angelina Jolie struggles to open the envelope...) ROCK RAPTORS!!

Break down was as follows:
Rock Rampage - 16% (3rd - 4 Votes)
Rock Spartans - 4%
Rock Raptors - 28% (1st - 7 votes)
Rock Boulders - 8%
Rock Hammerheads - 4%
Rock Impact - 8%
Rock Velocity - 0%
Rock Rapids - 8%
Rock Royals - 24% (2nd - 6 Votes)

This will now be forwarded onto the League Secretary for approval.

On other news, some b*****ds have nicked our gang mowers!! Our groundsman turned up on Thursday to cut the outfield only to be confused as to where the gang mowers were. It then sunk in.
With the club already committed to purchase a tractor as a replacement for the old jeep which is now so rusty it will soon degrade into its base elements and once again be at one with the Earth, also Tony wasn't keen on sharing his seat with the family of rats which live in the jeep over the winter (and summer months!), we will need to redouble our efforts to bring in more sponsorship to the club!

So now its on my back to get the sponsorship letters out asap!

Players can get theirs from me when we meet to sort the field and pavilion out over Easter weekend!

20/20 Team Name

2010 sees the start of something that everyone hopes will be the huge success it should be. The 1st 20/20 competition, with coloured clothing, pink balls, big sixes, slog sweeps, sunshine (we hope), and maybe  scantily clad cheerleaders (any volunteers?!), will all get underway on the 19th of June.

However before we start, the surprisingly forward thinking League Committee have asked each club to come up with a team nickname that would be used for this exciting 20/20 competition, mirroring the names the county game had to come up with when the 1st 20/20 cup was played. For example Durham CCC became Durham Dynamo’s and Middlesex CCC became Middlesex Crusaders (before changing it to something else because someone thought it might be insulting… *yawn*)

So you should see a poll with a list of names to the right of the screen with a list of names, compiled from various sources, to choose from. Please note that you can choose more than one name. The winning name will be put to the League for approval, at which point I’ll start working on a new team logo with a view of creating a brand we can use to build our club.

New Captain and a HUGE thank you!

Just a quick not to say that our AGM was held a few weeks ago and I WILL eventually get the minutes typed up and dispatched around the necessary persons.

A few notes to come out of the meeting, firstly Kevin Wilson will take the reins for the 2010 season (and hopefully beyond) we’ll all wish him well and pray his batting and bowling prowess won’t suffer with the added responsibility!

Secondly, a huge thank you to Mark & Myles Dean from The Horseshoes Inn, Rennington, who did a charity bungee jump from the Transporter Bridge in Middlesbrough, half of the money they raised is being donated to the club! Many thanks to them both!

Sponsorship letter should be getting distributed in the next 2 weeks once I receive the wallet sized fixture cards that should be on their way from the printers!
